How does Stem Cell Therapy Work?

The body has the ability to heal itself from within. There are two types of cellular factors that contribute to the healing process, stem cells and platelets. The expectation is that these cellular substances may stimulate a reparative process in the body via signaling or cell transformation. They can create an environment which can promote accelerated healing and reduction of inflammation. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and platelet rich plasma (PRP) are known as biologics and they are derived and injected into the area of damaged or degenerative tissue to stimulate growth and repair.
What are MSCs?
Stem cells are scientifically called “progenitor cells” and they are capable of transforming into varying cell and tissue types. For instance, if someone were to break a bone, the body would need more bone to produce in order to heal and seal the fractured area. Stem cells are “called” to action by populating the damaged area and assist in the production of new bone formation.
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are easily found in the bone marrow and within fat cells. The advantage for using bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) vs. fat (adipose) cells is that like adipose, BMAC contains mesenchymal stems cells (MSCs) that can stimulate wound healing, reduce inflammation, and modulate immune cells, but unlike adipose, it also contains significant numbers of other cell types that can induce new blood vessel growth and reinvigorate tissue that doesn’t have adequate blood supply. The bone marrow cells include cells that induce new blood vessel formation, thus inducing healing.
How is bone marrow harvested for stem cell therapy?
The bone marrow stem cell therapy process (BMAC- Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate) involves several steps. After completing an initial consultation and successful evaluation with one of our physicians, we will create an individualized treatment for you which may require MRI or ultrasound testing in order to reach a proper diagnosis.
After obtaining a diagnosis, and it is determined that you are an ideal candidate for bone marrow stem cell therapy, our experienced physician will harvest your bone marrow from the back of the pelvic bone (iliac crest) with the assistance of fluoroscopic (guided) x-ray technology. Once a proper amount of your bone marrow is collected for the procedure, we will begin the process of separation of the regenerative cells and proteins in our state-of-the art laboratory by using the most advanced technology.
Collected and concentrated stem cells are injected directly into the injured or diseased area with the guidance of fluoroscopic imaging system. The entire process only takes a couple of hours and depending on the area treated, patients may be able to maintain full mobility, returning back to their normal day to day routine directly after the procedure is completed.
After completing the stem cell therapy, patients are advised to avoid strenuous exercise that involves direct force of the treated areas for a number of weeks (this will be discussed in further detail with your physician and can vary based on your diagnosis and administered treatment plan) in order to give the body enough time to heal the injured area properly. Patients might experience soreness at the injected and harvested areas several days after the procedure.
